Trains at the Depot

The Beltrami County Historical Society and the Northern Iron Horse Railroad Society present for one day only, “Trains at the Depot” on Saturday, April 14th, 2018 from 10:00am-4:00pm.  The event will feature several model railroad displays, operating model railroads in several scales, railroad video displays, railroad photography displays, and the Northern Iron Horse Railroad Society’s club layout will be open for viewing.  Learn about Bemidji’s rich railroad history from several railroad enthusiasts, historians and fellow railroad buffs.  See a large Lego train and enjoy watching the world in miniature as model railroads from several scales including N, HO, and O traverse their tiny tracks.  Railroad videos will be on display, as well as railroad photography from the area.  Meet acclaimed local author DeeJay Arens and…

 The Sutter Brothers—Ross and Bart—will present a 50-minute program of music and stories, poetry and song that explores the history, culture, people, critters, and landscape of northern Minnesota. For more than thirty years, The Sutter Brothers have performed shows that integrate Bart’s original writing with Ross’ versions of traditional Scandinavian and American songs and tunes. “North Country Faces and Places” will offer glimpses of early settlers, memories of a vanished village school, a peek inside a pioneer cabin, a lament for lost towns, praise for big bogs, and celebrations of colorful farm folk and fishermen. The Beltrami County Historical Society will hold its annual meeting on Saturday, June 30th at the Beltrami County History Center.  The meeting will allow members to have their voices heard and help steer the direction of the Society.   As a member-driven organization, their involvement and input are invaluable, and benefit the Society’s work.  Business will be kept to a minimum to allow members an opportunity to socialize.  The agenda will include the election of officers to the Board of Directors’ executive committee, and the induction of our newest Lifetime Member.  This year’s honoree is long-time volunteer Judy Dvorak, who will also be receiving the Bemidji United Way’s “Someone Special” award.  All members in good standing are eligible (and encouraged!) to attend; renewals can be processed…

The Beltrami County Historical Society premieres Patrick Scully’s Leaves of Grass – Illuminated in Bemidji.  This solo performance by Patrick Scully summons the spirit of America’s great poet, Walt Whitman, revealing Whitman’s many sides: from the furtive—changing genders to “straighten things up”, to the fierce—defying the censors and getting banned in Boston.
