Beltrami County History Center Annual Meeting
June 29 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pmFree
The Beltrami County Historical Society will hold its annual meeting on Saturday, June 29th at the Beltrami County History Center. The meeting will allow members to have their voices heard and help steer the direction of the Society. As a member-driven organization, their involvement and input are invaluable, and benefit the Society’s work. Business will be kept to a minimum to allow members an opportunity to socialize. The agenda will include the election of officers to the Board of Directors’ executive committee, a reflection on the Society’s work over the past year, and a preview of upcoming programs and exhibits, including the Bemidji State University centennial retrospective exhibit, and the 2nd annual historical melodrama at the Beltrami County Fairgrounds in August.
Following the meeting, attendees are invited to stay for a keynote address by William Blackwell, Jr., Executive Director of the American Indian Resource Center at Bemidji State University. Director Blackwell will speak about issues pertaining to the preservation of sacred artifacts in museum settings, and the challenges for historians of accurately conveying the Native American experience. He will also discuss the impacts of advances in genetics and genealogy on determining tribal membership; two-spiritedness and gender theory among indigenous cultures; and, a collection of Ojibwe portraits by Bemidji photographer Niels Larson Hakkerup (a recently restored, early-20th Century camera used by Hakkerup will be on display). Q & A to follow.
All members in good standing are eligible to vote for board officers; an opportunity to renew membership will be made available. For additional information, please call 218-444-3376.
Coffee and other beverages provided. Please consider bringing a dessert to share.
